Many are reluctant to pursue acupuncture treatments because, despite the many who have realized benefits from it, much of the Why and How isn't fully understood. That's changing now, confirming the reality of this medical treatment's effectiveness.
A very high profile study did just that for acupuncture's ability to affect stress and anxiety. This is significant because these issues are among the top complaints people seek help for through Traditional Chinese Medicine in the U.S.
Feeling better is wonderful, but it's natural to wonder if it's just a placebo effect. We can now say it definitely isn't.
Why & How Acupuncture Produces Real Results
This study, published in the Journal of Endocrinology in March 2013, was performed by a team at the Georgetown University School of Nursing & Health Studies.
Rats were exposed over 10 days to an hour of stress each day, in this case through cold exposure. Some of the subjects were given acupuncture, specifically in the area below the knee, which is also a prime point where humans are treated for stress.
Others were not given treatment or had acupuncture applied, but in the tail area, a place not associated with these problems.
The rats given acupuncture below the knee consistently had much lower levels of stress hormones. Clearly they got benefits from the targeted acupuncture. There was even a further sub-group given acupuncture a few days before the study even started. Those rats did best of all, the pre-study treatments preparing them to deal with the later stress and anxiety effectively.
These results are seen in humans as well, this interruption in stress hormones happening exactly as it did in the animals at Georgetown University.
Though you can experience changes after the first treatment, it is crucial to understand that repeated visits and ongoing procedures will be the key to reducing persistent or ongoing conditions. What is clear, though, is that the rewards are real.
